What to know before your first tattoo

Everything to know before your first tattoo, from choosing a studio and what the pain feels like to deciding on a design and the day of your session.

The excitement of a first tattoo is great, but the right preparation makes the experience far more enjoyable. Here is a step-by-step guide for your first tattoo.

1. The studio is everything

When looking for a tattoo studio in Istanbul, hygiene comes first: single-use needles, sterile equipment and supplies opened in front of you are non-negotiable. Always review the artist's portfolio; every artist is strongest in a different style.

2. Take time over your design

Choose it because it means something to you, not because it is trending. A good studio will not push a ready-made catalogue on you; it listens to your story and draws a custom design. If you are undecided, a minimal start is always safe.

3. Be realistic about pain

Pain varies with placement, size and the person. Wrist, ribs and the top of the foot are more sensitive; upper arm and calf are more comfortable. Most of our clients say "it was less than I expected".

4. Preparing for the session

— Don't come on an empty stomach; eat well before the session.

— No alcohol for 24 hours beforehand — it increases bleeding.

— Wear comfortable clothes that leave the area exposed.

— Drink plenty of water and get enough sleep.

5. Aftercare is part of the process

When your tattoo is finished, half the job is done; the other half is aftercare. Follow the instructions for the first two weeks and your tattoo will heal as it looked on day one. See our aftercare page for details.

Aftercare 15 June 2026

How to care for a new tattoo

The steps to follow for the first 24 hours, the first two weeks and long-term care.

Aftercare during healing shapes the result as much as the quality of the tattoo itself. Poor care can lead to colour loss, blurred lines and a risk of infection.

First 24 hours: protection

Keep the wrap your artist applied on for the recommended time. After removing it, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap, pat dry with a clean paper towel and apply a thin layer of aftercare cream.

First 2 weeks: discipline

— Wash and moisturise 2-3 times a day.

— Never pick the scabs — that is the number one cause of colour loss.

— No pools, sea, sauna or baths; short showers are fine.

— Protect it from direct sunlight.

— Avoid tight clothing over the area.

Long term: vibrancy

Even after healing, regular moisturising and sunscreen in summer keep colours vivid for years. If your tattoo starts to fade, we can refresh it with our renewal (touch-up) service.

Contact us if you notice this

If you see excessive redness, increasing swelling, fever or signs of infection, contact both us and a medical provider. We offer WhatsApp support to our clients throughout healing.

Who are minimal tattoos for?

Why are minimal tattoos so popular? Who do they suit, where do they go and what should you watch out for?

It is no coincidence that searches for minimal tattoos in Istanbul have peaked in recent years: this style says a lot with few lines and is a favourite of beginners and experienced clients alike.

— First-timers — Short session, little pain and a timeless look.

— Busy professionals — Elegance that doesn't bother anyone, even in visible spots.

— "Less is more" people — Those who believe in the power of a single symbol.

Most popular minimal designs

Fine-line flowers, small symbols, coordinates, birth dates, single-word lettering and mini animal silhouettes stand out. Among women, wrist, behind the ear and collarbone are the most popular spots; among men, forearm and back of the hand.

What to watch out for

Minimal tattoos leave no margin for error: a single crooked line spoils the design. That makes choosing an artist experienced in fine work critical. Very small, very detailed designs can also blur over time; in the consultation we agree on the minimum workable size together.

Send us your minimal design idea on WhatsApp and get a price range for the size and placement right away.

What is a fine line tattoo?

Delicate single-needle lines: the details of fine line technique, how long it lasts and how it differs from minimal.

Fine line tattoos are among the most talked-about styles in Istanbul in recent years. So how are these delicate lines made, and are they really permanent?

Fine line, technically

As the name says, fine line is a thin-line technique: it is worked with very fine needle configurations such as 1RL or 3RL, at low speed and with high precision. The result is an elegant look, as if drawn with a 0.1 pen.

How is it different from minimal?

They are often confused: minimal describes the simplicity of the design, fine line the thinness of the line. A large floral composition can be fine line; a small heart with thick lines is minimal but not fine line.

The permanence question

The myth that "thin lines fade fast" comes from work done at the wrong depth. With the right depth and quality pigment, fine line tattoos are permanent; after the first year the lines soften slightly, a natural texture that gives the style its character.

Where it suits best

Collarbone, ribs, wrist and back of the hand... When fine lines follow the body's graceful contours, the effect multiplies.

Browse our fine line portfolio on the gallery page; we welcome you to a free consultation for your own design.

What is a cover-up tattoo?

You're not stuck with a tattoo you regret. How the cover-up process works and what's possible.

Searches for cover-up tattoos in Istanbul rise every year, because many of us have a youthful memory we wish we hadn't inked. The good news: with the right planning almost any tattoo can be covered.

How does a cover-up work?

A cover-up is the art of dissolving the old tattoo's lines and shading into a new design. The new design is somewhat larger than the old piece, strategically darker and more densely textured.

Which styles work well for cover-ups?

— Blackwork — The most reliable cover; dark and solid.

— Realistic shading — Loses the old tattoo in depth.

— Dense colour compositions — Floral and nature themes work very well.

How does the process go?

First we assess a photo of the old tattoo: its darkness, age and placement determine the strategy. For very dark work we may recommend 1-2 sessions of laser fading, which greatly increases design freedom. Then we draw a custom cover-up design and start once you approve.

Realistic expectations

A cover-up is strategy, not magic: the new design cannot be smaller than the old one and some colour combinations are limited. In the consultation we tell you honestly what is possible — because we don't want you to have regrets twice.

Send a photo of your old tattoo via the quote form; we'll do a free cover-up assessment.

How are sleeve tattoo prices set?

What sets the price of a sleeve project: size, style, number of sessions and the design process.

Sleeve tattoo prices are one of the most asked questions in tattooing. Why is it hard to give a fixed number, and what really sets the price? Let's be transparent.

5 factors that set the price

01 Scope — A half sleeve and a full sleeve differ significantly in both area and time.

02 Style — Blackwork fill and realistic detail don't take the same time; more detail means more sessions.

03 Number of sessions — A full sleeve usually takes 3-6 sessions; skin needs rest between them.

04 Design process — A custom composition includes sketching, placement tests and revisions.

05 Existing tattoos — Old tattoos to be incorporated or covered affect planning.

How to budget

We price sleeve projects per session, so you can move the project forward at your own pace and budget. In the free consultation before the first session we share a clear estimate of total sessions and the per-session range.

Why a consultation instead of a "price list"?

Every arm and every design is different. Instead of quoting a standard price and changing it later, we look at your arm, discuss the design and give you a realistic figure. This consultation is free and commits you to nothing.

Tell us about your sleeve idea via the quote form or WhatsApp; let's plan it together.

What to consider before a realistic tattoo

What determines the result of a realistic tattoo: reference photo, artist portfolio, placement and patience.

Realistic tattoos are considered the peak of tattoo art — but also a style that forgives no mistakes. Consider these points before you get one.

1. Review the portfolio, in detail

Not every realism artist is at the same level. Ask for photos of healed (not fresh!) realistic work; look at the smoothness of shading transitions and the accuracy of proportions.

2. Reference photo quality is result quality

A great portrait won't come from a low-resolution, badly lit photo. A naturally lit reference with clear facial detail is ideal. If your photo is weak, we suggest alternative compositions in the consultation.

3. Right placement, right size

Realistic detail can't be squeezed into a small area: a portrait needs a minimum size to look real. Wide, flat areas like the upper arm, forearm and chest are the best canvas.

4. Patience with the session plan

Quality realistic work takes 3-8 hours, and large projects are split into sessions. Rushed shading shows once it heals.

5. Extra care in aftercare

Heavily shaded areas don't forgive aftercare mistakes; moisturising and sun protection are critical in the first weeks.

We welcome you to a free consultation to discuss your realistic project; let's review your reference photo together.

What to know about tattoo needles and equipment

What do RL, RS and M1 mean? Tattoo machine types, needle configurations and how quality equipment affects the result.

An introduction to the world of equipment for anyone curious about the kitchen of tattoo art: needles, machines and supplies.

Needle configurations

The number in a needle code gives the needle count; the letters describe the grouping:

— RL (Round Liner) — Round grouping for linework. 1RL-3RL is the heart of fine line.

— RS (Round Shader) — Looser round grouping for soft shading.

— M1 (Magnum) — Fan grouping; large-area fill and realistic shading.

— RM (Round Magnum) — Curved magnum; gentle transitions on skin.

Cartridge system vs classic needles

Modern studios mostly use single-use cartridge systems: the needle sits inside a sealed cartridge with a membrane, reducing cross-contamination risk to zero. In our studio all work is done with sterile-packed, single-use cartridges.

Machine types

Rotary machines are quiet, light and stable; today they are the industry standard. Coil machines are known for their classic "buzz", and some artists still prefer them.

What does equipment quality change?

Quality pigment fades less, quality needles traumatise skin less and a stable machine draws cleaner lines. A "cheap tattoo" is usually made by cutting corners on these three — and you see the difference once it heals.

Why hygiene matters in tattooing

Why hygiene matters in tattooing

Sterile workspace, single-use supplies and proper waste handling: the unseen heroes of a safe tattoo.

A tattoo's beauty is appreciated over the years, but its hygiene is vital from the first second. After all, tattooing is a controlled skin procedure and deserves to be taken seriously.

What are the risks?

Unhygienic work carries risks of bacterial infection, blood-borne diseases such as hepatitis B/C, and allergic reactions. All of these risks can be prevented with the right protocols.

A safe studio checklist

— Are needles and cartridges opened from sterile packaging in front of you?

— Does the artist use new gloves at every stage?

— Are the chair, counter and machine wrapped in film?

— Are ink cups single-use?

— Does waste go into a medical waste container?

— Is the workspace disinfected between clients?

If the answer to any of these is "no", stay away from that studio — however attractive the price.

Hygiene protocol at D4stattoo

All supplies in our studio are single-use; surfaces are cleaned with medical disinfectant before and after each session and waste is separated. You can see the whole process on site during the consultation and ask any question you like. Details are on our hygiene page.
